Understanding Custom Extrusion: How Does It Work?

Extrusion is a multifaceted production method offering the capability to craft a myriad of shapes. Here’s a simplified walkthrough:

1. Design Phase: Based on the design you provide, a specialised die is fashioned to replicate the exact cross-sectional design of your desired profile(s).
2. Setting the Material: The selected alloy is positioned in an extrusion press.
3. Pressing Through: Using a robust ram, the alloy is pressed through the die. As it exits, it takes on the desired shape.
4. Cooling & Setting: As the newly-shaped alloy emerges, it’s methodically pulled along a conveyor, known as a runout table, and cooled using either air or water. Once it reaches the end, it’s cut to a predetermined length.
5. Alignment & Further Cooling: Post the initial cooling, the extruded profile undergoes a mechanical stretching process to ensure it’s perfectly aligned. It’s then allowed additional cooling time.
6. Final Touches: Once aligned and cooled, the profile is primed for further treatments – be it heat treatment for added strength or other fabrication processes, including machining or achieving the desired surface finish.
